They never planned to be library directors but when these library professionals were unexpectedly promoted after the sudden departures of their directors, they experienced a crash course in Leadership 101. Being asked or told to replace a director can be quite a career shock, especially to staff who never envisioned themselves in the director's seat. If ever there is a time to be a leader (or to cultivate new leadership skills) it's as a new director.
