Opening Session and Keynote Address: Sari Feldman
We are very excited to announce the keynote speaker for OLA 2016: Sari Feldman, President of ALA!

Her keynote will be titled “Libraries Transform – Amplifying the Story.”

Today’s library must demonstrate that we are neither obsolete nor nice to have, that libraries are essential. As we begin to tell our story we must begin with our communities; public, school, college and university, to reflect their needs, hopes and aspirations.  The story is then built on the ways that libraries create individual opportunity and community progress.  Sari Feldman will illustrate the power of our story through the ALA public awareness campaign, Libraries Transform, and its many library partners.

Sari Feldman is Executive Director of Cuyahoga County Public Library (CCPL), a position she has held since 2003. Under her leadership, CCPL has become one of the nation’s best and busiest public library systems, earning the Library Journal 5-Star recognition for six consecutive years (2009-2014).  She was honored in 1995 with the Vice President’s Award for Teacher of the Year from the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University.

Sari is currently president of the American Library Association, a position she will hold through June 2016. In her role as president, Sari has initiated a national public awareness campaign called Libraries Transform that is designed to increase awareness of and support for libraries of all types. She is a past president of the Public Library Association (2009-2010).

Short stories, graphic novels, romance fiction - genre terms for literature are making the leap from LCSH to LCGFT (Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms for Library and Archival Materials). How to Show and Tell a Legal Research Story: Searching Nolo and Fastcase
As of September 2015, the State of Oregon Law Library (SOLL) is providing statewide access (accessible via any browser anywhere in Oregon) to two vital legal research databases: Fastcase allows users to search cases, statutes, and regulations for both state and federal courts within the US 9th Circuit (Alaska, Arizona, California, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington) which can support or contradict a researcher's legal argument; Ebsco's Legal Information Reference Center contains Nolo self-help legal information books and a nationwide database of sample legal forms on such topics as landlord/tenant law, estate planning issues, and family law matters. In this session, get an overview of what these free resources have to offer, how to navigate them, and learn why and when to direct patrons to each (and, conversely, when to refer patrons to a law librarian!). Taught by experienced public and academic law librarians, attendees will gain the skills necessary to confidently utilize and recommend these unique SOLL-hosted databases.

When Others Tell Our Story: Librarian Portrayals in Film
This program will highlight how librarians are portrayed in film. What can we learn about our own profession by the way others tell our story on the big screen? Culled from years of film analysis and research, as showcased on the presenter's site Reel Librarians (http://reel-librarians.com), this program will feature both female and male "reel" librarian portrayals, illustrated with cinematic examples. How might these portrayals help (or inhibit) connections between librarians and our communities? Let's all come together to identify and laugh - or groan! - at how we are portrayed in the "reel" world.

We said, they said: Sharing our stories with vendors
Technical services departments rely on vendors to facilitate acquisitions, reveal our collections, and bring content to our communities. Telling our story - our wishes, needs and expectations - and listening to the vendor story in turn is a fundamental aspect of library management. How can we create the best working relationship free of disappointments and unfilled assumptions? Join librarians and vendors as we explore the best methods of building rapport, finding support and communicating with each other. The discussion will use two technical services projects as examples: UO's EDI invoicing project and Hillsboro Public Library's shelf-ready project.

What's Their Story? Using an Online Assessment Tool to Learn About Patron Skills
We believe our patrons can use our electronic resources, but international assessment data tell a different story. The US population scores below the international average in problem solving in technology-rich environments, so Multnomah County Library and Portland State University are collaborating on a project funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services to assess patrons' online abilities and how those abilities map to common library tasks. Results will help inform how online library services are presented and will help ensure computer class content includes meaningful skills.

Chasing Your Own Tale: A Librarian's Introduction to Genealogy and Genealogical Sources
Genealogists, from absolute beginners to professionals, love nothing more than talking about their ancestors. Teaching a genealogy class means listening to those stories, and also guiding the search and providing resources to enrich the stories. One of the first places a genealogist visits to do their research, the public library is a natural fit for this kind of class. You don't have to be a professional genealogist to teach research methods and introduce students to quality websites, library databases, and specialized collections. YOU can help your patrons find and tell their own stories. This introduction is geared towards library professionals who have little or no experience with genealogy.

Curiosity @ Your Library
For many people, students in particular - choosing a topic is the scariest and most difficult part of the research process. They want to stick to safe ground where they know they'll find sources; we know that the fun happens when we explore the unknown and learn new things. Tired of helping students do research on the same topics over and over, and concerned that students weren't making the connections between research and learning, librarians at Oregon State University shifted their approach, putting curiosity at the center of the research process. With curiosity at the center, we can design lessons, displays, programs and activities that encourage patrons to follow their interests, sometimes to places they didn't know existed! And by doing it together, we reduce the fear of the unknown, and emphasize the importance of curiosity to the research process, and to lifelong learning.

All children entering public schools in Oregon will be screened for dyslexia, and teachers will be trained in effective teaching methods. What does this mean for libraries? Embedded Professionals at the Library
Many of us have heard the concept embedded or community librarians. These librarians provide services to target audiences off-site, specifically where people live, work or play. In fact, many of us have already implemented a community librarian model and are seeing a lot of success with this approach. But, what about embedded professionals in our space, such as social workers in the library, lawyers in the library, nurses in the library, small business mentors in the library? These programs have been successful too. However, while we are happy to be embedded in other agencies, organizations, and groups, we have concerns about professionals in our library. A panel of librarians and practitioners of the "in the library" programs will talk about the pros and cons of these programs and whether it's right for your library and our profession. COMBINED WITH Patrons say they are computer illiterate. They need assistance with electronic resumes. Can't find reliable, qualified volunteers in your community to provide computer instruction? Quit spinning your wheels and listen to our story. Due to large demand and lack of resources, libraries need a cost-effective way to bridge the digital divide in their communities and increase information literacy programming. Come and learn how to recruit a full-time volunteer who can dedicate all their time to digital literacy and job skills training. Attend this session to see if Americorps is your solution.

Visual Stories - Putting the Sexy Back in Assessment
Having goals for the future can be magic!  Whether you have goals for your library, your department, or specifically for yourself, this session will help you map out ways of visualizing those goals.
After looking at examples of annual reports summarized in infographics and data dashboards, participants will start out by sketching the "dream" infographic for their library 6 years from now. Using that sketch as a starting point, we'll look at different ways of comparing our data, visualizing our data, and using online tools for creating the graphics. Along the way, participants will build out a rough assessment plan to help them get started toward achieving the data visual of their dreams. We will finish with a gallery walk to learn from each other by seeing how neighbors represented their libraries in their infographic sketches.

Autoethnography: Our Stories, Our Research
Autoethnography is a research method, whereby researchers investigate aspects of what it means to be a librarian. Starting with a reflective examination of themselves they investigate questions of library culture, values and identity. Autoethnography has potential to help librarians answer questions that cannot be answered by traditional, empirical research methods and to reveal voices that are obscured by aggregations of data. Autoethnography blends art and science and is at turns evocative, analytical, and creative. It can help us look deeply into our library culture, critique it where need be, transform ourselves, and ultimately inspire us to change librarianship for the better.
